Understanding collaboration patterns on funded research projects: A network analysis

Abstract This paper provides an examination of inter-organizational collaboration in the UK research system. Data are collected on organizational projects funded by four key councils: Arts and Humanities Research Council, Economic Social Engineering Physical Sciences Biotechnology Biological Council. The partnerships include both academic nonacademic institutions. A network is created for each council, exponential random graph model applied to inform mechanisms underpinning collaborative tie formation council-funded projects. We find that sciences, patterns much more hierarchical concentrated a small handful actors compared social sciences humanities Institutions members elite Russell Group (a set 24 high-ranking universities) likely be involved collaborations across councils.
